Construction workers in Singapore must pass the Construction Safety Orientation Course and renew it regularly. This free quiz goes over the course rules and the safety law behind it in fourteen questions, in simple English, with the source for every answer.
The CSOC and its renewal
The Construction Safety Orientation Course for Workers (CSOC) is the safety orientation course for the construction sector; its WSQ title is «Apply Workplace Safety and Health in Construction Sites». According to the Ministry of Manpower, workers with 6 years or less in the industry must pass the safety orientation course once every 2 years, and those with more than 6 years once every 4 years, counting active employment only. Since January 2024 an online micro-learning programme helps workers prepare for the recertification assessment, with modules on work at height, vehicular safety, slips, trips and falls, and machinery safety.
A worker who fails must complete the full course and the WSH micro-learning programme before trying again, and must pass within 3 months from the expiry of the previous course to avoid work permit revocation. Workers who completed the supervisor course «Supervise WSH in Construction Sites», formerly the BCSS, are exempted.
The law behind it
The Workplace Safety and Health Act 2006 asks employers to take, so far as is reasonably practicable, the measures necessary for the safety and health of their employees, including adequate instruction, information, training and supervision (section 12). Every person at work must use the protective equipment provided so that it gives the protection intended, and must not misuse it (section 15); a negligent act that endangers safety can bring a fine of up to $30,000, two years in jail, or both.
The Risk Management Regulations require employers to eliminate foreseeable risks where reasonably practicable, or else minimise them with substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls and personal protective equipment, and to review the risk assessment at least once every 3 years, or sooner after an injury or a significant change in work. Accidents are reported to MOM within 10 days.
Practice, not the CSOC assessment
These are practice questions written by Quizhat from Singapore legislation and MOM guidance. They are not the CSOC test set or its answers, and Quizhat is not affiliated with MOM, the WSH Council or any accredited training provider. The real course includes a practical part and is offered in several languages; this quiz is in English only. Use it to revise before the course or the recertification, or in a toolbox meeting.
