Before you work on a construction site in Ireland you need a valid Safe Pass card. These two free practice quizzes go over the law and the site hazards the one-day course is about, with the regulation behind every answer.
What Safe Pass is
Safe Pass is the one-day health and safety awareness programme run by SOLAS. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Construction) Regulations 2013 require craft and general construction workers and people doing on-site security work to hold a valid safety awareness card (regulation 25 and Schedule 4). On your first day on a site, the contractor you work for must ask to see it. Some tasks, such as slinging and signalling, scaffolding or driving a dumper or a mini-digger, also need a CSCS card.
The card is valid for four years. At the end of the course there is a multiple-choice assessment; to renew, you can repeat the course or, according to SOLAS, take an alternative computer-based renewal test of 50 questions in 45 minutes at a test centre.
What the practice quizzes cover
The first quiz is about the law: who needs the card, your duties under section 13 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (no intoxicants, report defects, use the protective equipment correctly), the safety statement and how often it is shared, safety representatives, protection against penalisation, and when an accident must be reported to the HSA.
The second quiz is about the site: guard-rails at least 950 mm high, inspection of working platforms and excavations, when a ladder is acceptable, noise action values at 80 and 85 dB(A), PPE as the last line of protection, and avoiding manual handling. The figures come from the General Application Regulations 2007 and the Construction Regulations 2013.
Practice questions, not the real test
These questions were written by Quizhat from Irish law and HSA guidance. They are not SOLAS questions, they are not the questions you will see in the assessment or the renewal test, and Quizhat has no link with SOLAS, the HSA or any Safe Pass tutor. For the format, SOLAS links a free online revision portal and a sample test from its Safe Pass page. Use our quizzes to check your understanding, or to discuss the answers as a group on site.
