Every worker and supervisor in Ontario must complete basic health and safety awareness training. This free quiz goes over the rights and duties that training is built on, with the section of the Occupational Health and Safety Act behind each answer.
The awareness training rule
Ontario Regulation 297/13 requires employers to make sure every worker completes a basic occupational health and safety awareness program as soon as practicable, and every supervisor within one week of starting to work as a supervisor. A worker who already did it can show proof of completion, and the employer checks that it meets the requirements. The ministry offers free programs, the worker workbook «Worker Health and Safety Awareness in Four Steps» and a supervisor version, as a workbook or e-learning; employers can also use their own program if it covers the content set by the regulation.
For workers, that content is: the rights and duties of workers, the duties of employers and supervisors, the roles of health and safety representatives and joint committees, the roles of the ministry and the WSIB, common workplace hazards, WHMIS, and occupational illness, including latency.
Rights and duties in the quiz
- Worker duties (s. 28): work safely, use the required protective equipment, report defects and hazards, and never remove a protective device or engage in horseplay;
- supervisors and employers (ss. 25 and 27) must take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances;
- the right to refuse unsafe work (s. 43): report it, stay in a safe place during the investigation, and call an inspector if the problem is not resolved;
- no reprisals for following the Act (s. 50);
- a joint health and safety committee from 20 regularly employed workers, a representative above five (ss. 8 and 9);
- reporting a critical injury immediately, with a written report within 48 hours (s. 51).
Using the quiz
Play it at the end of an orientation, after the ministry workbook, or as a refresher at a committee meeting. These are practice questions written by Quizhat from the Act and its regulations; they are not the ministry's e-learning questions or answers, and Quizhat is not affiliated with the Ontario government. The quiz does not replace the awareness training itself or the instructions specific to your workplace.
