Managers and supervisors are expected to understand how health and safety is managed, not only the rules for the shop floor. This free revision quiz covers the management side in thirteen questions, with the law or HSE guidance behind every answer.
The ideas behind managing safely
The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 asks employers to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of their employees, and to have a written health and safety policy. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 turn that into a method: a suitable and sufficient risk assessment, recorded where there are five or more employees; preventive measures chosen according to the general principles of prevention, starting with avoiding risks and giving collective measures priority over individual ones; recorded arrangements for planning, organisation, control, monitoring and review; and one or more competent persons to help.
HSE's guide Managing for health and safety (HSG65) frames this as Plan, Do, Check, Act. «Check» means active monitoring before things go wrong, such as planned inspections, and reactive monitoring after they do, such as accident and near-miss data. HSE's workbook Investigating accidents and incidents (HSG245) explains immediate, underlying and root causes, and why fixing only the immediate cause leaves the real failing in place.

Many managers search for these topics before a branded course such as IOSH Managing Safely. This quiz is not that course or its assessment: it was written by Quizhat from the legislation and free HSE guidance, it does not use any course material, and Quizhat is not affiliated with IOSH, NEBOSH, HSE or any training provider. Use it to revise the ideas, then follow your provider's own materials and assessment.
